Description

In the Twenty-First Century, higher education embraces the principles of diversity and inclusion, but has this equated into students of color having more meaningful experiences in the academy? This essay asserts that American Indian women still face gender bias, racism, stereotypes, discrimination, hostility, and cultural issues which lead to marginality and oppression at the doctoral level in a colonized system of higher education. Additionally, it identifies tactics employed by these women to overcome these challenges and successfully graduate. As an increasing number of American Indian women aspire to the doctorate, it is important that both they and their universities become aware of the experiences of those who have completed the degree. This helps them understand the encounters of their predecessors, and to identify strategies used to successfully navigate through the educational system. This is especially important for Native women who identify and practice their tribal life ways, as their cultural values often clash with mainstream society on many levels including American higher education. Although, the annual number of doctorates awarded to American Indian women each year is small, each' graduate is a valuable human resource for tribes wanting to maintain their sovereignty and self-determine their futures.
